Intermediate Championship

Well done to Fintan and the lads who came away from Colmcille with a hard fought two-point win over Sean Connolly’s 1-11 to 0-12. We trailed by a point at half time 0-6 to 0-5 which could have been more were it not for a wonderful save by Paddy Collum on Dessie Reynolds, coupled with some good defending by both lines. Martin Cassidy got the opening score after he jinxed his way around a few defenders and the same player later converted a free for a foul on Pauric Gill. Gill and Cassidy combined to set up Conor Keenan for a well struck point and Keenan fired over another from distance. Paddy Collum converted a ‘45’ to ease some pressure from further up the pitch. We fell further behind on the resumption but with David Collum and Liam Lynch winning ball at midfield we started to get back into the game and Pauric Gill ran through for a point for our first score of the half and then the lively Cian Cassidy struck the leveller. The crucial score of the game came midway through the second half when the hard-working Emmet Noonan burst his way through after receiving the ball from Philip Kane, and he found man of the match Conor Keenan at the edge of the square who made no mistake. Keenan extended our lead to 4 soon after but back came the Connolly’s to draw the match before the Cassidy lads kicked on two winning scores. The next outing is Sunday, August 21st at 1.30pm in The Laurels against Legan Sarsfields. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (0-1, ‘45’), Paul McGee, Cian Brady, JP Farley, Mark Hughes, Gary Connell, Emmet Noonan, David Collum, Liam Lynch, Sean Whelan, Conor Keenan (1-3), Pauric Gill (0-1), Podge Gill, Martin Cassidy (0-4,2f). Subs used: Philip Kane, Cian Cassidy (0-2)

Junior Championship

Our Junior C team earned a 2-7 to 0-13 draw against Cashel last Thursday. Declan Donnelly fisted a great goal to the back of the net with the last play of the game. Brendan McCann had earlier slotted a wonderful goal to get us back into the match. It was great to welcome back Padraig O’Neill to the maroon and gold after a long number of years away The team and scorers were as follows: Graham Lee, Anthony McKeon, Derek McKeon, James O’Neill, Gerard McKenna (0-2), Declan Donnelly (1-0), David McKenna, Gearoid Nertney (0-1), Ciaran Cooney, Darren Cawley (0-1), Mike Mulleady, Tyrone Crowe (0-1,1f), David Taylor, Paul Donnelly (0-1), Gabriel Higgins (0-1). Subs: Luca O’Reilly, Brendan McCann (1-0), Darren Smith, Padraig O’Neill, Gareth Donnelly. The next match is tomorrow Thursday, August 11th against Kenagh in McGann Park. The Junior B team is playing Dromard, tonight, Wednesday at 8pm in Monaduff. Best of luck to both our teams

U13 Championship

Pride of place this week goes to our St. Vincent’s U13 team who qualified for the championship A final for the second year in a row after beating Dromard in the semi-final last Tueday week. Well done to the team and management team of Gordon Smyth, Bobby Hilton and Paul Dowler

Intermediate Championship

We got the Intermediate championship campaign off to a winning start last Saturday in difficult greasy conditions in the splendid Dunbeggan grounds against Ardagh/Moydow on a scoreline of 2-18 to 2-12. We got off to a flying start with 4 points in quick succession but Ardagh came back with three on the trot to leave just one in it but two further points left it 0-6 to 0-3 in our favour before Ardagh struck for a goal to level proceedings. Pauric Gill quickly re-established a lead which we did not lose from there and then Liam Lynch slapped a goal after a wonderful pass from captain Emmet Noonan to put some breathing space between the sides. Half time score was 1-11 to 1-6. The second half started sluggishly and we were punished with the concession of an unfortunate goal when a ball spun to an unmarked player after Noonan made an excellent block, but the team rallied and made victory secure after a well-placed Martin Cassidy goal in the 53rd minute. There should have been more goals as Gill and the two Cassidys all hit the crossbar in that intervening period but nonetheless the team held on for the win so well done lads. The next outing is this Friday, August 5th at 8pm in Fr. McGee Park against Sean Connolly’s. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum, Paul McGee, Cian Brady, JP Farley, Mark Hughes (0-1), Gary Connell, Emmet Noonan, David Collum, Liam Lynch (1-0), Sean Whelan, Conor Keenan (0-3), Pauric Gill (0-6), Jamie Nertney (0-1), Podge Gill, Martin Cassidy (1-5,3f). Subs used: Philip Kane (0-1), Cian Cassidy (0-1), Aiden Gray

Pat Flynn – Appreciation

Fr. Manning Gaels was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our all-time club legends, Pat Flynn, Corrick, last week. Pat was a lionhearted half back and one of the stars of the team of the 1950s which won three senior championships; 1951, 1953 and 1955 as well as a Senior League title in 1953 and the prestigious Feis Cup in the early 1960s. The 1953 county final preview described Pat as “very fast and elusive. Will give his opponent many a heartache”. When Pat’s playing days were over (and indeed during them) he was instrumental in training and coaching underage teams, as well as the senior teams. He also served a number of different positions on the club executive and as a trustee from the 1950s onwards and was a Club President to this day. He was ever-present at matches from schoolboy all the way to senior, with his unmistakable voice always giving in words of encouragement to his beloved maroon and gold. Our splendid grounds in Monaduff are thanks in large part to Pat, as it was in his Corrick home that he, along with a number of other great Gaels met and decided to purchase the piece of land from Joe Mallon which we now call Monaduff Park. Pat also provided valuable information with regards to the club’s history, a history he was immensely proud of. To his daughters Rosemarie and Carina, his grandchildren, the Noonan family, extended family and friends we extend our deepest sympathy. Solas na bhFlaitheas air

ACFL Division 1

There was another busy week for our senior team with the conclusion of the division 1 league last week. On Wednesday evening last we were faced with the difficult task of playing the county champions Mullinalaghta in the Laurels, which was made more difficult by being short a number of players. Mullinalaghta lead 2-11 to 0-4 at half time, scoring a penalty with the last kick. The Gaels scores came from two frees from Paddy Collum for fouls on Dean Cosgrave and Pauric Gill, a nice long-range effort from Podge Gill; and Pauric Gill. It finished 3-20 to 1-7 with the second half scores coming from a fisted effort from Pauric Gill, a 14-yard free from Podge and 1-1 from Conor Keenan, the goal well placed in the corner after being put through by Pauric Gill. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (0-2, 2f), JP Farley, Cian Brady, Paul McGee, Jamie Nertney, Gary Connell, Kaelum Gill, Mark Breslin, Sean Whelan, Dean Cosgrave, Conor Keenan (1-1), Pauric Gill (0-2), Mark Hughes, Aiden Gray, Podge Gill (0-2,1f). Subs used: Stephen Cosgrave, Philip Kane, Kevin Whelan and Kevin Whitney. On Saturday evening we played our final match against Mostrim in Monaduff. This was a must win game in order to maintain Division 1 status. We started very brightly with a goal from Pauric Gill after being put through by Jamie Nertney. This was followed by a good score from Conor Keenan. Our other scores came from Pauric Gill, after a terrific long ball from Keenan; Podge Gill and a long-range free from Paddy Collum after a foul on Dean Cosgrave. The sides were level 1-4 to 0-7 at half time. However, the second half was all Mostrim and the Gaels just did not play to the required standard, taking 20 minutes to register a score and only scoring two in total in the second half – a Conor Keenan effort from distance and a Martin Cassidy free for a foul on Pauric Gill. Mostrim pulled away and won 0-16 to 1-6 in the end. The result means we will be playing Division 2 football next year. The focus now is on championship and we are out in the first round against Ardagh Moydow on July 30th. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (0-1,1f), Stephen Cosgrave, Cian Brady, Paul McGee, Jamie Nertney, Gary Connell, Kaelum Gill, Liam Lynch, David Collum, Dean Cosgrave, Conor Keenan (0-2), Pauric Gill (1-1), Mark Hughes, Podge Gill (0-1), Martin Cassidy (0-1,1f). Subs used: Philip Kane, Petie Collum, Emmet Noonan and Sean Whelan. We wish Dean Cosgrave a speedy recovery from the nasty knee injury he sustained in the second half.

ACFL Division 1

We had two matches in the senior league last week and were very unlucky not to come away with points in both. On Wednesday last we were defeated 2-15 to 2-11 by Granard in Monaduff. The team was dealt a severe blow before the match when we lost captain Emmet Noonan to injury and Stephen Cosgrave also received an injury which resulted in him having to come off during the match. We wish both lads a speedy recovery. We were leading this match at half time 1-6 to 0-8, with the goal coming from a Paddy Collum penalty after Pauric Gill was hauled down. A lack of concentration in the second half resulted in two Granard goals but we pulled one back thanks to Conor Keenan, who had a magnificent match, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (1-0, pen) Stephen Cosgrave, Cian Brady Paul McGee, Mark Hughes Gary Connell, JP Farley, Liam Lynch, David Collum, Jamie Nertney, Conor Keenan (1-3), Dean Cosgrave (0-2), Aiden Gray, Martin Cassidy (0-6, 5f). Subs Kaelum Gill, Sean Whelan, Podge Gill

On Saturday we were defeated by Longford Slashers in a cracking match in Monaduff 1-15 to 2-11. We raced into a 1-2 to nil lead early on against a gale force wind, Conor Keenan picking up where he left off in the Granard match, raced through in the opening minute for a well taken goal. Keenan then placed Pauric Gill who was fouled and Martin Cassidy slotted the resulting free over and then notched a fine effort from play. Slashers came back and kicked 7 on the trot before Pauric Gill chased down a dropping effort from Dean Cosgrave to punch a goal on the stroke of half time to leave us 2-2 to 0-7 in front. Some fabulous points came in the second half from Keenan, Cosgrave and Gill to leave us three in front but Slashers were thrown a lifeline when Joe Kelly pulled on a ball to the net after a rebound off the post wasn’t cleared. The lead changed numerous times before the end and Slashers kicked three points in injury time to win it. It was disappointing not to get a chance to level at the end. Martin Cassidy slotted a free over after Gill raced through and was fouled and from the resulting kick out Sean Whelan won a terrific aerial ball and was wrongly blown for laying the ball off to a team mate off the shoulder, as he had never put his hand up to call a mark, which is the rule. The team and scorers were as follows. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (0-1, 1f), JP Farley, Cian Brady, Paul McGee, Jamie Nertney, Gary Connell, Kaelum Gill, Liam Lynch, David Collum, Dean Cosgrave (0-1), Conor Keenan (1-2), Pauric Gill (1-2), Martin Cassidy (0-5, 2f, 1m), Aiden Gray, Mark Hughes. Subs: Podge Gill, Sean Whelan.

The busy schedule continues for the lads as we play Mullinalaghta tonight, Wednesday, June 29th in the Laurels and the final league match at home to Mostrim on Saturday, July 2nd at 7pm. Best of luck to the team and management

ACFL Division 1

We had a disappointing result last Saturday against Carrickedmond when losing 0-13 to 0-9 in Michael Moran Park. Trailing 0-4 to 0-2 at half time after playing against a gale, it died down significantly in the second and Carrickedmond raced six clear on the resumption. The team rallied with a couple of great long-range scores from Conor Keenan, converted frees from Martin Cassidy for fouls on himself and Pauric Gill, and Gill had an opportunity for a goal to level proceedings but was flicked over the bar by the keeper. Missed opportunities and handling errors cost us from narrowing the gap further and Carrickedmond kicked on again to win by four. Our next match is Wednesday week at home to Granard. The Division 4 team has a bye this weekend. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (0-1, 1f), Paul McGee, Cian Brady, Stephen Cosgrave, Emmet Noonan, Gary Connell, JP Farley, Sean Whelan, Liam Lynch, Mark Hughes, Conor Keenan (0-2), Pauric Gill (0-1), Martin Cassidy (0-5, 4f), Podge Gill, Dean Cosgrave.
