ACFL Division 4

Hard luck to our Division 4 team who were beaten in the Bertie Allen Cup semi-final by Grattans last Friday evening, 1-12 to 1-10. Team and scorers were as follows: Cody Lee, Sean McKenna, Declan Donnelly, Caelum McGee, Kevin Whitney, Stephen Cosgrave, Tom McGee, Jim Rogers, Mark Breslin, Ryan Crowe (0-5, 4f), Kevin Whelan (1-0), Petie Collum (0-4, 1f), Aiden Gray, Cathal Quinn, Orrin Greene (0-1). Subs: Sean Whelan, Chris Crowe, Podge Gill. There is a Division 5 match this evening Wednesday in the Laurels against Mullinalaghta at 7.30pm. Best of luck to all involved.

Patsy Reilly Cup

On Sunday afternoon last we were defeated in the league semi-final by Sean Connollys, 2-14 to 1-9. Gaels started brightly with a couple of excellent scores from Sean Whelan, after a neat Cian Cassidy pass and a Conor Keenan score before Cian Brady had to retire with a nasty head injury. His replacement Aaron Quinn made an immediate impact as he powered through for a fine point after being placed by Pauric Gill to leave scores 0-3 apiece midway through the first half. It was all Connollys after this however and they led 0-9 to 0-3 at the break. We got ourselves back into the match when Paddy Collum converted a penalty after Gill was brought down and the latter then missed a goal chance to level proceedings. Keenan fired over a couple more excellent points to keep Gaels in contention but the concession of two goals in the space of a minute with ten minutes left saw Connollys hold an unassailable lead. Cassidy rounded off the Gaels scoring from frees for fouls on himself and Gill. We wish Cian Brady a speedy recovery from the head injury he sustained in the early stages of the game.Team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (1-0, pen), Sean McKenna, Cian Brady, Paul McGee, Dean Cosgrave, Darren Reilly, JP Farley, Mark Hughes, Sean Whelan (0-1), Caelum McGee, Ryan Crowe, Tom McGee, Cian Cassidy (0-3, 2f), Pauric Gill (0-1), Conor Keenan (0-3). Subs: Aaron Quinn (0-1), Kevin Whelan, Kevin Whitney, Orrin Greene.

ACFL Division 4

Pride of place this week goes to our reserve team who landed the Division 4 league title on Tuesday evening of last week when they defeated Ardagh Moydow 1-19 to 4-9. It was tight at the top of the table with Ardagh Moydow and Kenagh also in contention depending on the result of this match. A three-point defeat or better was sufficient for the Gaels to win the title and that was not looking likely midway through the second half as we trailed by 6 points. However, with midfielders Mark Breslin and Jamie Nertney running from deep and Sean Whelan and Ryan Crowe getting on lots of ball, the impressive comeback started and was fittingly finished by Captain Sean Whelan when he stroked over the winning score from 45 yards three minutes into stoppage time. Gaels had led at the break 1-8 to 2-3, with the goal coming from Ryan Crowe – an excellent finish into the bottom corner after receiving a slick pass from Aaron Quinn. However, on the resumption the visitors hit a quick 2-2, before the lads came back to clinch victory in a very entertaining match. Team and scorers were as follows: Cody Lee, Ciaran Cooney, Darren Reilly, Caelum McGee, Jamie Nertney (0-4), Declan Donnelly, Kevin Whitney, Sean Whelan (0-1), Mark Breslin, Ryan Crowe (1-7, 5f), Aaron Quinn, Petie Collum (0-4, 1f), Orrin Greene, Cathal Quinn (0-2, 1m), Chris Crowe. Subs: Padraig O’Neill (0-1). A word of thanks to the management team of Graham Lee, Darren Smith and Dessie Connell who looked after the lads, Elaine with the physio and Gareth Donnelly. A special mention to Padraig O’Neill who came home from holidays early to make the second half and make an immediate impact with a vital point from a narrow angle! The lads are out in the Division 4 Cup semi-final this Friday night, July 5th, in Monaduff at 8pm. against Grattans. Best of luck all.

ACFL Division 2

On Friday evening last the Gaels finished off the league with a 2-13 to 1-9 win over Cashel in Newtowncashel. Gaels trailed 1-2 to no score early on but battled back to lead 1-6 to 1-4 at the interval, with the goal coming from Cian Cassidy. It remained tight throughout the second half until Cian got his second goal, after good work from Martin set him up and Gaels ran out seven-point winners. Team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum, Cian Brady, Darren Reilly, Caelum McGee, Kevin Whitney, JP Farley (0-1), Dean Cosgrave (0-1), Aaron Quinn, Sean Whelan, David Collum (0-1, 1m), Ryan Crowe (0-4, 1f), Kaelum Gill (0-1), Cian Cassidy (2-1), Cathal Quinn (0-1), Conor Keenan (0-1). Subs: Jamie Nertney, Mark Breslin, Martin Cassidy (0-2, 2f), Sean Hourican, Chris Crowe. The Patsy Reilly Cup semi-final is fixed for this Sunday, July 7th, at 2pm in Monaduff. Best of luck to all involved.
