Club News 31-03-2024

ACFL Division 2 

Well done to the lads who got the league off to a winning start last Friday when beating Young Grattans, 2-12 to 1-9 in Monaduff. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum, Tom McGee, JP Farley, Paul McGee, Kaelum Gill (1-0), Dean Cosgrave, Jamie Nertney, Mark Breslin, Sean Whelan, David Collum, Conor Keenan, Mark Hughes (0-2), Cian Cassidy (1-2), Kevin Whelan (0-1, 1m), Martin Cassidy (0-7, 5f). Subs used: Aiden Gray, Ryan Crowe, Eoin Murtagh. Best of luck to Niall, Sean, Graham and the team in the next round, this Saturday at 6.30pm against Sean Connolly’s in Ballinalee.

Sympathy 

The club expresses its deepest sympathy to the Nertney family, Clonmacart, on the passing of Paddy Nertney. Paddy’s sons Gearóid and Eamon are both very much involved with the senior and underage club and Jason has represented the Gaels both on the pitch and very successfully at Scór. Grandsons Jamie and Jack are part of our senior team. Paddy himself proudly wore the maroon and gold representing the Gaels in the 1970s. Our thoughts and prayers are with Paddy’s wife Mary, children Eamon, Leona, Gearóid, Sharon, Eileen, Aisling and Jason, grandchildren, extended family and many friends at this difficult time. Scór Sinsir 

Pride of place this week goes to our senior Scór competitors who performed really well in the finals in Abbeylara last Friday. Congratulations to our Figure Dancers and Recitation who won county titles and now progress to the Leinster semi-final representing Longford. The Figure Dancers are: Lorraine Corrigan, Sinéad Tobin, Pauline Duffy, Amanda Duffy, Breda Lynch, Ciara Donnelly, Aisling Donnelly and Linda Ozolina and our Recitation was won by Siobhán O’Neill Donoghue. Also competing for us on the night and who were unfortunate to miss out were our Instrumental Musicians: Cathal Culliney, Katriona Connellan and Gerry McKenna and Solo Singer: Antoinette McCormack. The Question Time team of Ciaran Cooney, Pauric Gill, Joseph Gill and Gabriel Higgins will be competing in a couple of week s time. Thank you to Lorraine Corrigan for all her hard work in organising our competitors and for organising the competition in her role as county board Irish language and Cultural Officer. 

 

ACFL Division 2 

The season starts on Good Friday when we play Young Grattans in the first round of the Division 2 league. Throw-in is at 7.30pm in Monaduff. Best of luck to Niall, Sean, Graham and the team.

Everyone at the Gaels would like to wish our hard-working clubman Paul Dowler a speedy recovery as he recovers from an accident. We look forward to having Paul back out and about around Monaduff again soon. 

 

Sympathy 

The club expresses its deepest sympathy to the Crowe family on the very sad passing of Sharon Crowe. Eddie and the entire family have given decades of exemplary service to the club on and off the pitch and our thoughts and prayers are with all of Sharon’s family and friends and this very difficult time. Our condolences are also extended to the family and friends of Johnny McKeon (uncle of our clubman Tommy McAvey) who passed away in America recently and to Sarah Lennon on the passing of her mother Elizabeth Gilchriest. U-21 Championship 

The U-21s played Granard on Sunday afternoon last in the championship in Monaduff and were beaten, 3-15 to 2-2. Team: Kieran Mulligan, James Garvey, Aaron Brady, David McKenna, Jared Weafer, Kaelum McGee, Rory McEvoy, Sean McKenna, Kaelum Gill, Paul McGee, Chris Crowe (1-0), Jack Nertney, Orrin Greene (1-1), Rokas Stoskus, Eoin Garvey. Subs: Eoin Murtagh, Sean Hourican, Jamie Nertney (0-1), Anthony Bispo. The next game is this Sunday at 12pm against Ardagh Moydow in Monaduff. Best of luck to the team and management. 

 

Patsy Reilly Cup Final 

On Friday night last we were defeated in the Patsy Reilly Cup final by Kenagh on a score-line of 2-11 to 1-5 in Cashel. We started brightly and led early on, 1-2 to 0-1 after Cian Cassidy scored a well-taken goal after being put through by Conor Keenan. The momentum of the game changed midway through the first half when Kenagh ran through for a goal in a play which resulted in Cian Brady being dismissed and his presence was sorely missed in the backline. Well done to Kenagh on their win and we wish them the best of luck in the Leinster club championship. Annual General Meeting 

Please note a change to the previously advertised date for the AGM. It will now take place on Wednesday night, November 8th in Monaduff at 8pm. 

 

Dinner Dance 

The club is holding a special dinner dance this year to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the three-in-a-row senior championship winning teams of 1996-1998. It will take place on November 11th in Lough Rynn Castle. There will be a three-course meal, live music and a special guest. Tickets cost €30 and it’s a night not to be missed. Tickets can be purchased from Lorraine. 

 

October Bonanza Draw

U-21 Championship 

The U-21 championship started last Sunday in Monaduff and the Gaels were beaten by Rathcline, 2-11 to 0-7. It was 0-5 to 0-4 to Rathcline at half time but they dominated the second half to run out comprehensive winners. Team: Cody Lee, Aaron Brady, Caelum McGee, Paul McGee (0-1), Sean McKenna, Rory McEvoy, Kaelum Gill, Jim Rogers (0-2, 2f), Orrin Greene, Christopher Crowe (0-3, 3f), Sean Hourican, Rokas Stoskus (0-1), Eoin Mealy. Subs: Nathan Maher, Anthony Bispo, David McKenna, James Garvey, Eoin Garvey. The next game is this Sunda at 2pm away to Granard. Best of luck to the team and management. 

Patsy Reilly Cup Final 

The final game of the year takes place this Friday night as we play Kenagh at 8pm in the Patsy Reilly Cup final, the venue has yet to be determined. Best of luck to the team and management.

Monaduff Marathon  

The Monaduff Marathon for Children’s Health Ireland is back for 2023 on Saturday 28th October in Monaduff Park. Notable achievement 

Well done to Aaron Gillooley, son of club and county great Ciaran, who made the Donegal championship team of the week recently for his performance marking Michael Murphy. A proud moment for grandparents Mary and Paddy.  

Sympathy 

We extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Colin Heaney who died in America recently. Colin was a former underage player with the club. Our sympathies too, to our supporter Kate Anne Devine on the passing of her brother Brian O’Hara. Solas na bhFlaitheas orthu
