Senior League Division 1: It was a busy week for our senior team who played the first two rounds of the Division 1 League. Unfortunately results did not go our way as we were defeated by both Clonguish and Dromard.

On Wednesday evening last we faced neighbours Clonguish in Monaduff. Clonguish got out of the blocks much quicker and held a commanding 3-9 to 0-4 lead at half time. Our lads showed great spirit in the second half and fought back to reduce the deficit to 5 points with 10 minutes remaining. However, a penalty late on from Clonguish made the scoreline 4-14 to 1-13 in favour of the visitors. The team and scorers were as follows:

Paddy Collum (1-0 (pen)), Mickey Kelly, Cian Brady, Dan Gorman, Aaron McGee, Mark Hughes, Eoin Keane (0-5, (4f)), Mark Duffy, Liam Lynch, Seán Whelan, Dean Cosgrave (0-1), Diarmuid Cooney, Martin Cassidy (0-4), David Cassidy (0-1), Pauric Gill (0-2).

Substitutions: Kevin Whelan for Seán Whelan, Emmett Noonan for Aaron McGee, Anthony Kane for Mark Duffy, Petie Collum for Dean Cosgrave, David Collum for David Cassidy.

Thank you to Lorraine Corrigan for providing the refreshments to both sets of players afterwards.

Next we played our other neighbours Dromard on Easter Sunday in Páirc na nGael. After an evenly contested first half, Dromard went in at the break ahead 1-6 to 0-4 having scored a goal on the stroke of half time. Dromard, rallied by the goal, kicked on in the second half and went on to win by 8 points, 1-14 to 1-6. The team and scorers were as follows:

Paddy Collum (1-1, (1pen, 1‘45)), Mickey Kelly, Fergal Reilly, Dan Gorman, Emmett Noonan, Mark Hughes, Eoin Keane (0-1, (1f)), Kevin Whelan, Liam Lynch, Ciarán Cooney, Pauric Gill (0-2), Petie Collum, Diarmuid Cooney, David Cassidy (0-2, (2f)), Martin Cassidy.

Substitutions: David Collum, Aaron McGee, Seán Whelan, Dean Cosgrave, Cian Brady.

The next round of the league is this Saturday coming at 6pm in Monaduff against Longford Slashers. Please support.

This book is of great interest to anyone connected to the College or who is interested in the GAA. There is plenty of information and photographs contained within the book about past players from Drumlish and Ballinamuck who have won Leinster and All-Ireland titles with St. Mel’s. Cost is €25 and is available to buy in the College, Newsround and Donlon’s in Longford town.

GAA Nursery

GAA NURSERY

Saturday April 29th will see the launch of the Club’s first GAA Nursery for boys and girls aged from 4–6 years. The emphasis of the Club’s Nursery will be on fun and child development and over the course of the Nursery programme help children with everyday values required in life such as teamwork, discipline and fair play.

At our Nursery, children will be introduced to sport in a friendly, fun and safe environment not just concentrating on GAA skills but also fundamental skills known as the ABC’s – Agility, Balance and Coordination.

Children will follow a specific programme of progression in their development of individual motor skills (jumping, throwing, catching, striking) and it is our aim to keep the coaching sessions fun and with plenty of variety with these important skills in mind.

We know that children grow, develop and learn at different rates throughout their lives and with the help of a group of dedicated coaches and parent helpers, we hope to assist in every child’s development regardless of their sporting ability.

The club’s Nursery section is open to all children from 4 – 6 years old, however to be eligible, children must be currently in their final year of preschool or already in junior infants. We will also work with the U-8 coaching team to evaluate suitability between both grades.

No appointment or pre-arranged meetings are necessary, just come along to one of our sessions where parents will initially be fully engaged with their child in the activities. The first phase of the Nursery will see it run for 6 weeks and after a short break, will resume again for a longer period.

Details of sessions are as follows:

Dates: April 29th, May 6th, May 13th, May 20th, May 27th, June 3rd

Time:  10:30 to 11.30 (arrive a bit early on the first day to sign in and register)

Venue: Drumlish Community Centre

Contact: Enda McGahern (086 8290649)

Registration forms are available to download here and will be sent to Primary Schools and Crèches in the local areas. While not necessary, arriving with a completed registration form will ensure there are no delays.

OBJECTIVE OF NURSERY

To encourage boys and girls to participate in playing Gaelic Football in a structured and fun environment by:

  • Introducing the child to the skills of Gaelic Football .
  • Preparing the child to participate at competitive or recreational level as a player.
  • Producing players who have a basic command of all fundamental playing skills.
  • Developing the balance, coordination and footwork of the players.

GROUPS WITHIN THE NURSERY

Parents of children MUST be present at all times to support their children during the training session.

Groups will be divided by age, but in order to ensure that children are comfortable within groups, skill level is taken into account when dividing groups.

We are always looking for parents who are interested in getting involved in underage coaching. There is full training and support provided by the club Coaching Officer. Please inform the club coaching officer or one of the committee members if you are interested.

With only a few minutes left on the clock Granard pulled the deficit back to one, but the Gaels managed to hold on to grind out the victory.
