Club News 02-06-2024

John Joe Sorohan RIP  The club was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John Joe Sorohan in Limerick recently. John Joe was the steadfast goalkeeper on our 1953 senior championship and senior league winning team. His performances earned him a call up to the senior county panel later in the year. We extend our deepest sympathies to John Joe’s family and friends. Solas na bhFlaitheas air    ACFL Division 5  The Division 5 team had a great 1-9 to 1-4 win over Granard on Wednesday evening last. New recruit Cathal Quinn was the difference between the two teams with 5 excellent points. Orrin Greene reacted quickest to a dropped shot to slap in the important goal midway through the second half The team and scorers were as follows: Cody Lee, James O’Neill, Mick Kane, Caelum McGee, Ciaran Cooney, Eoin Murtagh, Kevin Whitney, Aaron Crowe, Mark Duffy, Sean Hourican (0-1), Petie Collum (0-2, 2f), Christopher Crowe, Orrin Greene (1-1) Cathal Quinn (0-5, 2f), Padraig O’Neill. Subs: Aaron Quinn, Jack King, David McKenna. Division 2 is this Sunday at 2pm against Ardagh Moydow in Keenan Park. Best of luck to the team and management.      Lotto  The lotto draw took place in The ‘98 Bar, Ballinamuck on Monday night last, May 27th. The Jackpot was €17,600. The numbers drawn were as follows:  10, 19, 20, 21  There was no winner. Hard luck to Paddy Collum and the Longford team on their defeat by Waterford last Saturday. Well done to Paddy who was acknowledged at county training during the week by Longford GAA for having over 100 appearances for Longford seniors. This is a great achievement, and he is only the fourth clubman to reach this significant milestone, following in the footsteps of such legends as Jimmy Hannify, Frank McNamee and Padraic Davis. Since his debut in 2012, Paddy has now played 126 competitive games for Longford and represented Leinster in the 2016 Railway Cup.

ACFL Division 2 

There was mixed fortunes for the team on the playing fields last week. We lost to Colmcille, 0-13 to 0-6, last Tuesday evening week in very difficult wet conditions in Fr McGee Park. The team and scorers were as follows: Aiden Gray, Cian Brady, JP Farley, Paul McGee, Dean Cosgrave, Kaelum Gill, Tom McGee, Mark Breslin, David Collum, Kevin Whelan, Conor Keenan (0-1), Pauric Gill (0-1), Jamie Nertney, Martin Cassidy (0-4, 4f), Cian Cassidy. Subs: Sean Whelan, Ryan Crowe, Sean McKenna, Caelum McGee, Eoin Murtagh. Last Sunday in Monaduff we defeated Kenagh 3-8 to 0-7. The team and scorers were as follows: Cody Lee, Cian Brady, JP Farley, Paul McGee, Pauric Gill, Dean Cosgrave, Kaelum Gill, Mark Breslin (0-1), Sean Whelan, Kevin Whelan (0-1), Conor Keenan (2-2), David Collum, Jamie Nertney, Martin Cassidy (0-2), Cian Cassidy (1-2). Subs: Mark Hughes for P Gill (inj), Cathal Quinn, Ryan Crowe, Darren Reilly, Kevin Whitney. Fr Manning Gaels would like to welcome Cathal Quinn to the club. Cathal is a well-established businessman in Quinn’s Bar, Drumlish for many years now and has generously given sponsorship to the club at various times over the years and it’s great to see him out in Monaduff. 

 

ACFL Division 5 

The Division 5 team were well beaten last Wednesday in Colmcille by the home side, 5-8 to 1-1. The team and scorers were as follows: Ryan Francis, James O’Neill, Mick Kane, Caelum McGee, Aaron Brady, Ciaran Cooney, Sean Hourican, Mark Duffy, Orrin Greene, Petie Collum, Eoin Murtagh (0-1), Christopher Crowe, Jack King, Cody Lee, Padraig O’Neill. Subs: Brean Kane, Kieran Mulligan (1-0), David Taylor, Derek McKeon, Gareth Donnelly. the team is out again tonight, Wednesday, at 7.30pm in Monaduff against Granard. Best of luck.

Longford 

Congratulations to Oisin Kane, Sean Gibbons and manager Enda McGahern on their terrific victory defeating Dublin to win the Leinster minor championship. This is a brilliant achievement, and we wish them the best of luck as they prepare for an All Ireland quarter-final. Best of luck to Paddy Collum and the Longford team in the Tailteann Cup match against Waterford this weekend.

ACFL Division 2 

Division 2 continued yesterday evening Tuesday against Colmcille. The lads are out in action again this Sunday in Monaduff against Kenagh at 2pm. Best of luck 

 

ACFL Division 4 

The Reserve team received the points from Cashel last Friday evening. Division 5 starts this evening, Wednesday, against Colmcille in Fr McGee Park at 8pm. 

 

Lotto

Longford 

Hard luck to Paddy Collum and the Longford team on their defeat by Leitrim at the weekend in the Tailteann Cup.  

 

Brian Collum 

This week we especially remember Brian Collum whose 10th anniversary was on Monday. Brian was an immensely talented footballer, for club and county, as well as an exceptional musician. Most importantly he was a young gentleman who was respected and admired by all who had the privilege to know him. Brian’s anniversary Mass is next Friday at 8pm in St Mary’s Church, Drumlish. Remembered always by your teammates at Fr Manning Gaels. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh aige. 

 

Annual Mass 

The Annual Mass for deceased members of the Fr Manning Gaels, St Vincents and St Helens clubs took place last Sunday. Thank you to all who participated. Carrying up the footballs were Oisin Tobin and Suzie Lynch. Jerseys were presented by Mike Mulleady, Derek McKeon and Imelda Mulvaney. First reading was read by Podge Gill. Dara Léacht was read by Jamie Nertney. The Prayers of the Faithful were read by Avril Murtagh, Nathan Maher, Jack Nertney, Anna Mulleady, Emeline Crowe and Sarah Mollaghan. The Offertory Procession was Kathleen Creegan and Olive Donnelly; and the Communion Reflection was read by Seán Crowe. Thank you to Fr Ber for celebrating the Mass, the altar servers: MJ Dunne, Ben Hilton, Cillian Davis and Lauren McCormack and also the choir for their beautiful singing.

Club News 12-05-2024

ACFL Division 2 

Well done to the lads who had a hard-earned win over Killoe on Wednesday evening of last week, 2-11 to 2-7, in Monaduff. We trailed at half-time 1-6 to 1-2. The goal came after Pauric Gill came through the middle and placed Conor Keenan who made no mistake with an excellent finish. We fell further behind on the resumption with the concession of a goal but David Collum immediately responded with a toe-poked goal of his own and the team rallied from there to emerge by four points. The team and scorers were as follows: Cody Lee, Paul McGee, JP Farley, Cian Brady, Pauric Gill (0-2), Kaelum Gill, Dean Cosgrave (0-1), Mark Breslin (0-1), Sean Whelan, Jamie Nertney, Conor Keenan (1-2), David Collum (1-0), Martin Cassidy (0-3, 1f), Kevin Whelan, Cian Cassidy (0-2, 1f). Subs used: Mark Hughes, Liam Lynch, Ryan Crowe, Cian Murphy. The league continues this Tuesday, May 21st at 7.30pm against Colmcille in Fr McGee Park. 

 

ACFL Division 4 

The Reserve team had a good 1-22 to 2-9 win over Kenagh on Sunday afternoon last. The lads trailed by a point at half time but come at a different side after the break. The team and scorers were as follows: Cody Lee, Sean McKenna, Stephen Cosgrave, Caelum McGee, Tom McGee (0-1), Declan Donnelly, Sean Whelan, Jim Rogers (0-1), Jamie Nertney (0-3), Ryan Crowe (0-10, 3f), Kevin Whitney (1-2), Kevin Whelan (0-4), Orrin Greene. Subs used: Darren Farley, Petie Collum (0-1, 1f), Eoin Murtagh, Aaron Brady, Robbie Rehill. 

The league continues this Saturday, May 18th when we play Cashel in Monaduff at 7pm. Best of luck to the team and management.

Fixtures

We are out in Division 2 action tonight Wednesday against Killoe in Monaduff at 8pm. The Division 4 team play Kenagh on Sunday at 2pm in McGann Park. Best of luck to both our teams. Last week’s Division 4 match with Ardagh Moydow was postponed on account of the passing of Micko Doyle. We extend our sympathy to the Doyle family and the Ardagh Moydow club.

Darkness Into Light

Fr Manning Gaels and St Helens will host a Darkness into Light walk in in aid of Pieta House on May 11th starting at 4.15am. The walk will start and end at Monaduff GAA Grounds. There is no pre registration nor registration fee. Donations will be collected on the morning. Refreshments served after the walk in the clubhouse.

The club extends its sympathy to the family and friends of Paddy Davis who passed away recently.

Hall of Fame
Congratulations to Liam Forde on his Hall of Fame award at the Longford GAA Awards last night for his services to ladies football for both club and county. Liam has been a constant since being the first trainer of Éire Óg (the former name for St Helens) when they were founded in 1981 and he has been involved with teams at various grades consistently since. Liam served as Chairman of the club from 1987 until 2003, when he became Club President and as Chairman of the county board from 1992 until 2001 when he became President of the county board. He was part of the Longford management team which won the All Ireland Junior championship in 1997 and was the manager of St Helens which won senior championships in 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994 and again when amalgamated with Rathcline in 1996. He was also the manager for many other league, tournament and underages successes and is still involved with the Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others team. Well done again Liam!
