Pat Flynn – Appreciation
Fr. Manning Gaels was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our all-time club legends, Pat Flynn, Corrick, last week. Pat was a lionhearted half back and one of the stars of the team of the 1950s which won three senior championships; 1951, 1953 and 1955 as well as a Senior League title in 1953 and the prestigious Feis Cup in the early 1960s. The 1953 county final preview described Pat as “very fast and elusive. Will give his opponent many a heartache”. When Pat’s playing days were over (and indeed during them) he was instrumental in training and coaching underage teams, as well as the senior teams. He also served a number of different positions on the club executive and as a trustee from the 1950s onwards and was a Club President to this day. He was ever-present at matches from schoolboy all the way to senior, with his unmistakable voice always giving in words of encouragement to his beloved maroon and gold. Our splendid grounds in Monaduff are thanks in large part to Pat, as it was in his Corrick home that he, along with a number of other great Gaels met and decided to purchase the piece of land from Joe Mallon which we now call Monaduff Park. Pat also provided valuable information with regards to the club’s history, a history he was immensely proud of. To his daughters Rosemarie and Carina, his grandchildren, the Noonan family, extended family and friends we extend our deepest sympathy. Solas na bhFlaitheas air

ACFL Division 1
There was another busy week for our senior team with the conclusion of the division 1 league last week. On Wednesday evening last we were faced with the difficult task of playing the county champions Mullinalaghta in the Laurels, which was made more difficult by being short a number of players. Mullinalaghta lead 2-11 to 0-4 at half time, scoring a penalty with the last kick. The Gaels scores came from two frees from Paddy Collum for fouls on Dean Cosgrave and Pauric Gill, a nice long-range effort from Podge Gill; and Pauric Gill. It finished 3-20 to 1-7 with the second half scores coming from a fisted effort from Pauric Gill, a 14-yard free from Podge and 1-1 from Conor Keenan, the goal well placed in the corner after being put through by Pauric Gill. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (0-2, 2f), JP Farley, Cian Brady, Paul McGee, Jamie Nertney, Gary Connell, Kaelum Gill, Mark Breslin, Sean Whelan, Dean Cosgrave, Conor Keenan (1-1), Pauric Gill (0-2), Mark Hughes, Aiden Gray, Podge Gill (0-2,1f). Subs used: Stephen Cosgrave, Philip Kane, Kevin Whelan and Kevin Whitney. On Saturday evening we played our final match against Mostrim in Monaduff. This was a must win game in order to maintain Division 1 status. We started very brightly with a goal from Pauric Gill after being put through by Jamie Nertney. This was followed by a good score from Conor Keenan. Our other scores came from Pauric Gill, after a terrific long ball from Keenan; Podge Gill and a long-range free from Paddy Collum after a foul on Dean Cosgrave. The sides were level 1-4 to 0-7 at half time. However, the second half was all Mostrim and the Gaels just did not play to the required standard, taking 20 minutes to register a score and only scoring two in total in the second half – a Conor Keenan effort from distance and a Martin Cassidy free for a foul on Pauric Gill. Mostrim pulled away and won 0-16 to 1-6 in the end. The result means we will be playing Division 2 football next year. The focus now is on championship and we are out in the first round against Ardagh Moydow on July 30th. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (0-1,1f), Stephen Cosgrave, Cian Brady, Paul McGee, Jamie Nertney, Gary Connell, Kaelum Gill, Liam Lynch, David Collum, Dean Cosgrave, Conor Keenan (0-2), Pauric Gill (1-1), Mark Hughes, Podge Gill (0-1), Martin Cassidy (0-1,1f). Subs used: Philip Kane, Petie Collum, Emmet Noonan and Sean Whelan. We wish Dean Cosgrave a speedy recovery from the nasty knee injury he sustained in the second half.

ACFL Division 1
We had two matches in the senior league last week and were very unlucky not to come away with points in both. On Wednesday last we were defeated 2-15 to 2-11 by Granard in Monaduff. The team was dealt a severe blow before the match when we lost captain Emmet Noonan to injury and Stephen Cosgrave also received an injury which resulted in him having to come off during the match. We wish both lads a speedy recovery. We were leading this match at half time 1-6 to 0-8, with the goal coming from a Paddy Collum penalty after Pauric Gill was hauled down. A lack of concentration in the second half resulted in two Granard goals but we pulled one back thanks to Conor Keenan, who had a magnificent match, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (1-0, pen) Stephen Cosgrave, Cian Brady Paul McGee, Mark Hughes Gary Connell, JP Farley, Liam Lynch, David Collum, Jamie Nertney, Conor Keenan (1-3), Dean Cosgrave (0-2), Aiden Gray, Martin Cassidy (0-6, 5f). Subs Kaelum Gill, Sean Whelan, Podge Gill
On Saturday we were defeated by Longford Slashers in a cracking match in Monaduff 1-15 to 2-11. We raced into a 1-2 to nil lead early on against a gale force wind, Conor Keenan picking up where he left off in the Granard match, raced through in the opening minute for a well taken goal. Keenan then placed Pauric Gill who was fouled and Martin Cassidy slotted the resulting free over and then notched a fine effort from play. Slashers came back and kicked 7 on the trot before Pauric Gill chased down a dropping effort from Dean Cosgrave to punch a goal on the stroke of half time to leave us 2-2 to 0-7 in front. Some fabulous points came in the second half from Keenan, Cosgrave and Gill to leave us three in front but Slashers were thrown a lifeline when Joe Kelly pulled on a ball to the net after a rebound off the post wasn’t cleared. The lead changed numerous times before the end and Slashers kicked three points in injury time to win it. It was disappointing not to get a chance to level at the end. Martin Cassidy slotted a free over after Gill raced through and was fouled and from the resulting kick out Sean Whelan won a terrific aerial ball and was wrongly blown for laying the ball off to a team mate off the shoulder, as he had never put his hand up to call a mark, which is the rule. The team and scorers were as follows. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (0-1, 1f), JP Farley, Cian Brady, Paul McGee, Jamie Nertney, Gary Connell, Kaelum Gill, Liam Lynch, David Collum, Dean Cosgrave (0-1), Conor Keenan (1-2), Pauric Gill (1-2), Martin Cassidy (0-5, 2f, 1m), Aiden Gray, Mark Hughes. Subs: Podge Gill, Sean Whelan.
The busy schedule continues for the lads as we play Mullinalaghta tonight, Wednesday, June 29th in the Laurels and the final league match at home to Mostrim on Saturday, July 2nd at 7pm. Best of luck to the team and management
