First Round Defeat for Reserves

Fr. Manning Gaels 3-06

Carrickedmond 1-20

Hard luck to the Reserve team who were defeated in the first round of the championship by Carrickedmond on a scoreline of 1-20 to 3-6. The Gaels were short a number of players who would have been available for Reserve selection, however it was still a determined performance by the lads who now face Mostrim on the 27th of this month in what is a must win game for the team to qualify for the knock out stages. The Gaels were leading at half time 2-3 to 0-8, and it looked as if the Gaels were well in contention, however Carrickedmond asserted their authority in the second half (against a 14 man Gaels team after Anthony McKeon received a straight red) and ended up running out comfortable victors by 8 points.

The teams and scorers were as follows:

Anthony Keane, Rory Carthy (0-1), Declan Donnelly, Micheál Kane, Stephen Cosgrove, Leon McKeon, Robert Rehill, Michael Mulleady (1-03), Seán Whelan, Danny McGee, Martin Mulleady, Gearóid Nertney (1-0), Scott Howe, Derek McKeon (1-1), Podge Gill (0-1).

Substitutions: Darren Reilly, Kevin Whitney, Anthony McKeon

Narrow Defeat for St. Helen’s

St Helen’s 2:06
Mostrim 2:08

St Helen’s were unfortunate to lose out by two points to Mostrim in what was a close encounter on the evening of 24th June in the opening round of the senior championship. St Helen’s opened the game with two frees from Laura Burke followed by a goal from Orla Noonan. However Mostrim replyed with a goal minutes later. Consistent fouling on Orla Noonan allowed St Helen’s to lead as Laura Burke converted three more frees before the end of the first half. Our full back line done superb to keep Mostrim out while goal keeper Sinead Corrigan played exceptional despite recieving a shoulder injury. The team’s were even at half time with a scoreline of 1:5 to 1:5. Mostrim opened the scoring in the second half converting three points however St Helen’s soon replyed with a Patricia O’Hara goal. St Helen’s were left with 14 players while Mostrim lost two players who were also sin binned. Mostrim then converted two points however Laura Burke leveled the sides with two more frees. In the last few minutes of the game Mostrim added two points to the scoreboard allowing them to overcome St Helen’s. The girls will play Clonguish in the next round of the Championship on the 17th of July.
