ACFL Division 2

We drew with Killoe on Sunday morning last in Clonee, 1-20 to 0-23. It was a disappointing end to the game having been in control until the last ten minutes. Gaels led 0-12 to 0-6 at the break with scores coming from Cian Cassidy (including an excellent two pointer), Pauric Gill, Paddy Collum, Dean Cosgrave and a Jamie Nertney free for a foul on Gill. Gaels started the second half well and held a commanding eight-point lead with twelve minutes to go thanks in large part to a Dean Cosgrave goal after being place by Gill. However, Killoe took over in the final ten minutes, aided by a number of two-pointers, and brought the game back level going into injury time. It looked as if the Gaels had secured the win when Gill and Nertney reestablished the lead but with the last kick of the game Killoe fired over a two pointer from play for a share of the spoils. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (0-1, 1’45), Paul McGee, Cian Murphy, Caelum McGee, JP Farley, Aaron Quinn, Jamie Nertney (0-5, 2f), Mark Breslin, Kaelum Gill, Mark Hughes, Pauric Gill (0-5), Kevin Whelan, Clayton Finn, Dean Cosgrave (1-1), Cian Cassidy (0-6 (1 two-pointer)). Subs: Martin Cassidy (0-2) for Mark Hughes (inj), Sean Gibbons, Leon McKeon, Seán Hourican for Cian Murphy (inj). We wish Mark Hughes and Cian Murphy speedy recoveries from the unfortunate injuries sustained in the game. There was a minute silence held before the match for the late Mary McCormack, RIP. Tommy was the Gaels manager in 2008 and 2009 and the club extends its deepest sympathy to him and the McCormack family at this difficult time. Solas na bhFlaitheas uirthi. Our final game of the league is this Thursday evening at 8pm in Monaduff against Carrickedmond

ACFL Division 2

We were defeated by Mostrim last Saturday on a scoreline of 3-16 to 1-15. Gaels started brightly and were leading 0-6 to 0-1 midway through the first half with some great scores from Cian Cassidy, Pauric Gill, Kevin Whelan, JP Farley and a well struck two pointer free from Paddy Collum after a foul on Aaron Quinn. A Mostrim purple patch saw them go into the lead and they were ahead at the break, 2-7 to 0-11. Gaels remaining scores of the half came from Cassidy and Mark Breslin, which included an excellently struck two pointer. Mostrim took control of the second half and went into a five point lead, however when Pauric Gill placed Cian Cassidy for a goal to leave only two in it, it appeared that momentum might switch. Unfortunately this failed to materialise as Mostrim countered for another goal of their own as well as converted a number of soft frees. Gaels remaining scores came from the accurate Cian Cassidy and a Jamie Nertney free for a foul on Gill. Whatever chance Gaels had of salvaging something from the match went when a Gill goal opportunity went wide of the post. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum (0-3, 1TPF, 1’45), Paul McGee, Caelum McGee, Seán McKenna, JP Farley, Aaron Quinn, Tom McGee, Mark Breslin (0-3, one two-pointer), Kaelum Gill, Jamie Nertney, Cian Cassidy (1-5), Dean Cosgrave, Pauric Gill (0-1), Kevin Whelan (0-1), Mark Hughes. Subs: Seán Gibbons, Leon McKeon, Kevin Whitney. A minute silence was observed before the match as a mark of respect for the late Mostrim player, Alan O’Hara RIP. The Division 4 team are at home to Cashel this evening Wednesday in Monaduff at 8pm and the Division 2 team’s penultimate match of the league is Sunday morning at 11.30 away to Killoe. Best of luck to the team and management.
