Intermediate Championship

We were well beaten by Sean Connollys in the final group game on Saturday evening last in Killoe, 1-14 to 1-7. The team started well and led 0-5 to 0-3 after 25 minutes with the scores coming from Conor Keenan, a Jamie Nertney free and three points from the lively Martin Cassidy. However the Connollys took over into the break and were leading 0-7 to 0-5 at the whistle. A Connollys goal early in the second half killed the contest, though we later responded with one of our own when David Collum flicked a long Ryan Crowe ball into the net. Conor Keenan and Martin Casidy rounded off the scoring from a Gaels point of view. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum, Paul McGee, Cian Brady, Darren Reilly, Aaron Quinn, JP Farley, Kaelum Gill, Mark Breslin, Sean Whelan, David Collum (1-0), Mark Hughes, Jamie Nertney (0-1, 1f), Cian Cassidy, Martin Cassidy (0-4, 1f), Conor Keenan (0-2). Intermediate Championship

Well done to the team and management who had a 1-13 to 1-4 win over Ballymahon on Thursday evening last. This win means we have qualified for the semi-final with one round of the group stage left. The game started evenly and we equalised when Jamie Nertney pointed a free for a foul on Pauric Gill after good work from Sean Whelan. A couple more scores came from Gill and a Nertney free for a foul on Martin Cassidy, before Ballymahon struck for goal. Gaels responded well to this setback and fired over points from JP Farley (an excellent effort from long-range) and Cian Cassidy after superb direct ball was played in by Conor Keenan to Gill who played Cassidy through. Then a wonderful solo effort goal from Paul McGee put the Gaels in a commanding position. Paul tore up the pitch, evading many challenges and planted an excellent shot into the bottom left corner. Paul later took a very heavy frontal challenge, but played a stormer until the end. The first half scoring was closed with two further points from Gill and Martin Cassidy, after a great turnover, to leave it 1-7 to 1-11. The second half started off as the first finished with a good point from distance from Mark Breslin, then Martin Cassidy intercepted a kickout to place Pauric Gill for a point. Jamie Nertney fisted a score in response to two Ballymahon points. Cian Cassidy chipped over a lovely point when Sean Whelan won a great ball on the edge of the square and played it out to him. The scoring came to a conclusion in injury time with two more points from Mark Hughes and Gill, to leave it 1-13 to 1-4 in our favour. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum, Paul McGee (1-0), JP Farley (0-1), Cian Murphy, Kaelum Gill, Mark Hughes, Dean Cosgrave, Mark Breslin (0-1), Sean Whelan, David Collum, Conor Keenan, Jamie Nertney (0-3, 2f), Cian Cassidy (0-2), Martin Cassidy (0-1), Pauric Gill (0-4). Subs: Cian Brady, Ryan Crowe, Kevin Whelan, Cathal Quinn. We have a bye in the next round and then we play Sean Connollys in the last round on the weekend of September 21/22. There were a couple of errors in the teamsheets for the Cashel and Ardagh Moydow matches. Cashel should have read Conor Keenan (1-1) and Jamie Nertney (0-5, 5f). Ardagh should have read Sean Whelan (0-1)

James McCann scored the other goal, a cracking effort into the top corner after an excellent run along the endline. Team and scorers: Aiden Gray, David McKenna, Declan Donnelly, Sean McKenna, Caelum McGee, Ciaran Cooney, Tom McGee, Mark Duffy, Darren Farley, Petie Collum (1-3), Kevin Whitney, Chris Crowe (0-1), Jim Rogers (1-6, James McCann (1-1, 1f), Padraig O’Neill. Intermediate Championship

Well done to the team and management on a hard-fought 1-7 to 0-9 win over Cashel last Friday. Gaels led 1-4 to 0-3 at half-time with the goal coming from a fortuitous dropping shot from Conor Keenan. Cashel led early on but Gaels equalised with a free from Jamie Nertney for a foul on Pauric Gill after great work from Cian Cassidy to keep the ball in play. Keenan and Gill fired over points before Nertney struck another free for a foul on Gill and then Keenan got the all-important score. Gaels were unlucky not to score a goal at the start when Sean Whelan’s palmed effort from a Gill centre was very harshly adjudged to have been in the square. The start of the second half was dominated by Cashel and we failed to register a point until midway through the half when Conor Keenan was fouled and Nertney converted the free. Cashel brought the game back level in the closing stages and the very accurate Nertney came to the rescue with two late converted frees for fouls on Gill. The team and scorers were as follows: Paddy Collum, Paul McGee, Darren Reilly, Aaron Quinn, Mark Hughes, JP Farley, Dean Cosgrave, Mark Breslin, Sean Whelan, David Collum, Conor Keenan (0-1), Jamie Nertney (0-5, 4f), Cian Cassidy, Martin Cassidy, Pauric Gill (0-1). Subs: Cathal Quinn, Kaelum Gill. The championship resumes tomorrow Thursday when we play Ballymahon at 8pm in Newtownforbes. Best of luck to the team and management
