Reserve League Division 1

We played Dromard in the Bertie Allen Cup last Friday night in Monaduff. The game ended level on a scoreline of 0-9 apiece. It was disappointing not to win given that we dominated possession for long periods and Seán Whelan, to everyone’s bemusement,  had a clear point waved wide. However, the team did well to come back and earn a point having trailed by 2 coming into the closing stages of the match. We wish Derek McCormack and Cian Murphy speedy recoveries from the injuries they sustained during the match. The team and scorers were as follows:

Aiden Gray, Cian Brady, Liam Lynch (0-1, ’45), Derek McCormack, Emmet Noonan, Mark Hughes, Darren Farley (0-1), Seán Whelan (0-1), David Collum, Conor Keenan (0-2), Martin Cassidy (0-1), Aaron McGee, Cian Cassidy (0-2), Kevin Whelan, Dean Cosgrave (0-1)

Substitutions used:

Cian Murphy, Gary Connell, Brian O’Connor and Petie Collum

Reserve League Division 3

Our 13-aside Reserve junior league team we well beaten by Ardgah/Moydow on Saturday evening last. The full time score was 1-19 to 0-9. The team and scorers were as follows:

Michael Heslin, James O’Neill, Declan Donnelly, Tom McGee (0-1), Micheál Kane, Kevin Whitney, Jonathan Connell, Mark Breslin, Rúairí Carty (0-5), Seán Breslin, Mike Mulleady, Paul Donnelly, Gearóid Nertney (0-1)

Substitutions used:

Nigel Kiernan, James McCann, Petie Collum (0-2), Paddy McNally

Annual Mass

Our annual Mass for deceased members of the club was held last Sunday in Drumlish. Thank you to all who participated in the Mass. Molly Collum, representing the Nursery, took part in the opening procession, along with Cian Murphy, Elaine McKeon and Dean Cosgrave. Stephen McDermott read the first reading and Scott Howe read the second, as Gaeilge. Prayers of the Faithful were read by Jim Rogers, Rachel Murphy (Ballinamuck), Gary Connell, Ailish Noonan and Kevin Whitney. Offeratory Procession was by Sheila Davis and Frankie McGowan. Mia Kiernan read the Communion Reflection and the Eucharistic Ministers were Mary Breslin and Pat Corrigan. Thank you to the altar servers from both national schools and to the choir and Fr. Hogan for helping out with the organisation. A special word of thanks to Lorraine Corrigan for the overall organising of the Mass and to Betty Creegan for helping out.

Upcoming Fixtures

We are away to Abbeylara in the Bertie Allen Cup this Friday, May 24th at 8pm. On Saturday, May 25th, we are at home to Shroid Slashers in the Reserve League Division 3. Best of luck to our teams and management.

Longford

Best of luck to Paddy Collum, Pauric Gill, manager Padraic Davis, backroom team members Ian Higgins & Gordon Smyth and the rest of the Longford squad as they face Kildare in the Leinster Championship Quarter-Final this Sunday in Tullamore at 4pm. Best of luck also the Longford juniors who play Carlow in the Leinster championship, this evening Wednesday.

Seán Lenihan RIP

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of a true club, colleges and county legend during the week. Seán Lenihan (formerly of Gaigue), was a rock solid feature of the full back line for the club and Longford in the 1940’s and 1950’s. A prodigious underage player, he won both the Leinster Senior and Junior titles with St. Mel’s in 1945, and a senior title again in 1946. His performances earned him a place on the colleges inter-provincial team with Leinster, where he went on to win the All-Ireland in 1945. He again represented Leinster in 1946.  His talent transferred over to senior level where he was a mainstay at full back for Longford for years and was a winner of numerous championship and Leader Cup medals with us. The memory of his performances endured, to the extent that he was nominated at full back for the Longford Team of the Millenium in 2000. As well as being a terrific servant on the field, he went on to serve the club as team manager in the late 80’s and early 90’s. We extend our deepest sympathies to Seán’s family and friends.
